Issue brief prepared for FJ’s Environmental Justice Symposium (May 17 & 18th, 2022) addressing the impacts of the climate crisis on farmworkers in the areas of heat stress, pesticide exposure, food security, and water access.
An issue brief for health centers and clinicians outlining the continuing challenges in providing specialty care to agricultural workers and their families. The brief discusses lessons learned from FJ's Unidos project. The brief then explores opportunities for telehealth, based on a related effort with Harvard’s Center for Health Law and Policy Innovation (CHLPI) that involved workers directly in discussions about telehealth interventions. Finally, based on lessons learned, the brief highlights recommendations for health centers to promote access to specialty care among agricultural workers and their families.
Farmworker Justice's Unidos project has developed skin cancer resources for promotores de salud to use in outreach and to distribute to farmworkers, developed with community partners Campesinos Sin Fronteras and Vista Community Clinic, and with funding from the Bristol Meyers Squibb Foundation. This fotonovela, for farmworkers and their families, focuses on skin cancer, and skin cancer prevention. To print, choose "print on both sides" and "flip on short side." Available in Spanish only.
After receiving training using the curriculum, Pesticide Hazards, Field Sanitation, and Heat Stress for Farmworkers: A Training Curriculum for Lay Health Educators, promotores de salud can use this flip chart as a guide for their presentations to farmworkers. Promotores can also practice using the flip chart during the training session. Available in Spanish.
Special instructions for use of flipchart:
-Print the pages on both sides of the paper
-This flip chart is designed to be held on the presenter's forearm. Make sure that the odd numbered pages are facing the audience which will allow the speaker to read the text prompts that are on the opposite pages. For example, while displaying page 3 to the workers, text prompts are displayed on page 2, which faces the speaker.
A training-of-trainers curriculum to prepare promotores de salud for performing outreach and education for farmworkers in their communities. The curriculum provides information on occupational health hazards experienced by farmworkers across the US, gives an overview of workers' rights to a safe workplace, and includes modules on effective teaching techniques and presentation practice. Available in English and Spanish.
