Farmworkers and Comprehensive Immigration Reform

Farmworker Justice supports comprehensive immigration reform and supports the Campaign to Reform Immigration FOR America. As in the past, we anticipate that AgJOBS will move forward as an important component of comprehensive immigration reform ensuring that Congress meets the unique needs of agriculture.
On Tuesday, December 15, 2009, Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D.-Ill.) introduced a comprehensive immigration reform bill, CIR ASAP. Farmworker Justice is pleased that CIR ASAP includes the AgJOBS farmworker immigration legislation, which would provide undocumented farmworkers an opportunity to earn legal status through continued work in agriculture. CIR ASAP has over 90 cosponsors and is supported by the Congressional Hispanic, Black, Progressive, and Asian Pacific American Caucuses.
A summary of the bill can be found at the National Immigration Forum's webpage.

On April 29, 2010, Democratic Senators Schumer, Reid, Menendez, Feinstein, Leahy, and Durbin released the "Real Enforcement with Practical Alternatives for Immigration Reform" (REPAIR) , a framework for comprehensive immigration reform. This proposal is intended as a starting point for negotiations on immigration legislation. It includes the Agricultural Job Opportunities, Benefits and Security Act (AgJOBS). AgJOBS is a sensible solution to immigration policy issues for farmworkers, agribusiness and the nation. AgJOBS has the support of major labor and management groups, as well as bipartisan support in Congress.
